Frequently Asked Questions
When and where are the meetings?
Meetings are Wednesday at 7pm in Carmichael 2036. Facing the gym from Talley Student Center enter the far left building at street level in the second door and 2036 will be on your right.
I can't make it to any meetings can I still join?
Yes, of course. The meetings are just informational. You can always join online. We have several people each semester who never make it to meetings because of a class or work conflict, but still go on trips.
I'm busy and can't come to everything. Is that okay?
Of course. Only go on the trips you like. There are no obligations.
I don't have much/any outdoors experience, will there be opportunities for beginners with the club?
We try to provide many opportunities for beginners. The more you let us know what you want the more likely it is to happen.
What's the best way to keep up with what the club is doing?
The listserv.
Can you tell me what activities you have planned?
Our trips are led by members, most of whom are college students. Therefore we do not have a set schedule. Most of our trips are planned around one week in advance. If you come to a meeting or contact an officer we can try and let you know what's coming up.
Can I come on one or two trips to see if I like it?
Our official policy is to keep our trips members-only. We have busy schedules and a lot of members to serve; we focus on the members, because they've paid for the attention. If you're interested in outdoors activities, please join. You won't regret it. The number, variety, and quality of activities we do is high, and the cost low, especially considering that most trips are free other than food and gas.
How often do you do [activity]?
Since we are a member-run club it totally depends on the members we have. Some years there is lots of paddling, some lots of climbing, etc. If you join and let us know there is something you'd like to do we can probably make it happen.
Do you do (caving, hiking, scuba diving, whatever)?
If it's an outdoor activity we probably have at least one member who does it.
Where do I hand in my dues?
You can pay your dues at a meeting or by going to the Campus Recreation office and asking someone at the desk to place them in the outing club box (only checks, payable to NC State Outing Club, in our box please.) The Campus Recreation office is located in Carmichael Gym Room 1000. Please turn your waiver and fees in at the same time! It is very hard to manage otherwise.
I want a refund because a) I never got to go on any trips, b) I am too busy to participate, c) some other reason.
Dues are non-refundable. We don't guarantee that you will go on any trips, because this is a member-run club. Nobody is paid to ensure that you have a good time. If you want to get outdoors and do something, there are hundreds of people to do it with, and the club will even lend you gear. If you are too busy, we're sorry, but we have many members and we can't make exceptions to the rules, or the club will become unmanageable.
Can I still rent gear even if I'm not a member?
We do not rent gear to anyone. Members may borrow some gear under certain conditions. You can rent gear from the NCSU Outdoor Adventures Storehouse.
What activites have fees, and how much are they?
Most activities are free other than gas and food. There are charges for activities where we simply arrange something that's really run by someone else, such as skydiving or whitewater rafting. In these cases we usually get a group discount, which can be very significant.
